Suryakumar Yadav has made an “honest” confession that his numbers in ODI cricket have been “poor”. This has come after skipper Rohit Sharma made a striking revelation about Shreyas Iyer regarding the World Cup 2023.

That Suryakumar Yadav has not been able to crack the ODI format yet, despite is immense success and consistency in the more mercurial format which is T20 cricket, is confusing and shocking to the fans and would also be for the management that has put a great deal of faith in him in the ODIs in the absence of Shreyas Iyer.

In 26 ODIs, Suryakumar Yadav averages a mediocre 24 with just two fifties. He had a good start to his ODI career in the 2021 series in Sri Lanka, but recently he’s been really underwhelming in the 50-over format. In the 10 ODIs he’s played in 2023, SKY averages an even poor 14 with a best of only 35.

You can’t hide behind the bush: Suryakumar Yadav

Ahead of the fourth T20I against West Indies, SKY was honest in his assessment of his ODI numbers.

“You got to be honest with yourself. You can’t hide behind the bush. At the same time I am not thinking too much about what’s going to happen ahead, thinking about this [T20I] series,” SKY said.

Recently Sharma was in the USA where he made a comment regarding Iyer which could be considered as a threat to Suryakumar’s chances for the World Cup.

“Shreyas Iyer is on the track to full fitness, so fingers crossed for World Cup,” Rohit had said during an event in the USA last week.

Sanju Samson, another batsman who is in contention for a middle-order spot, has done well in his chances: in 12 knocks, Samson averages 55 with 3 fifties, including an 86* against South Africa

Iyer is likely to miss out on the Asia Cup 2023 as well, but might slot back in straight at number 4 if he’s fit for the Australia ODI series preceding the World Cup.

If Iyer and KL Rahul are both not fir the Asia Cup, then Samson and SKY both might get into the squad. Tilak Varma has also emerged as a left-field candidate to be considered for the Asia Cup even though he hasn’t played any ODI yet.
