Usman Khawaja led the Greens’ batting onslaught in Ahmedabad’s fourth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 on Thursday, ending his protracted wait for a Test century on Indian territory. At the renowned Narendra Modi Stadium, the ace opener gave Australia’s Steve Smith a narrow advantage over Rohit Sharma and company by smashing his first Test century in India.
In the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, opener Khawaja became the first Australian batter to record a century. On the first day of the fourth Test match against the hosts India in Ahmedabad, a ton-up Khawaja formed significant partnerships with players like Travis Head (32), Steven Smith (38) and Cameron Green (49*).

Once Greens reached 75-2 thanks to the in-form Khawaja and the Australian captain Smith, Rohit and company took two wickets before lunch, and the hosts also managed to get rid of two Australian batters after tea. Australia’s opening batsman Khawaja, who faced 251 balls on Day 1 of the fourth Test against Team India, finished undefeated on 104 as Australia reached 255/4 in 90 overs. Green, an all-around player, assisted the Australian opener as he reached 49 off 64 balls while remaining unblemished.

Speaking to Star Sports commentators Dinesh Karthik, Ravi Shastri and Matthew Hayden after the end of the day’s play in Ahmedabad, an emotional Khawaja reflected on his batting performance against India in the series decider. “It was a lot of emotion in that. I have been to India on two tours before this, and carried the drinks in eight Test matches. It was such a nice wicket; I just didn’t want to give my wicket away. It was a mental battle more than anything. You need to put your ego away. I’ve got no superstitions… just run through, stretch,” Usman Khawaja said

After pace ace, Green and Khawaja cobbled together an 85-run partnership. In the 71st over, Mohammad Shami dismissed Peter Handscomb for 17 off 27 balls. On Day 1 of the 4th Test in Ahmedabad, India’s top bowler was the fast bowler Shami. In the first innings, pacer Shami secured the key dismissals of Head and Handscomb. On the first day of the series-deciding Test match between the top-ranked Test sides, spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja shared two wickets. Hosts India now has a 2-1 advantage over Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which is impregnable. The hosts may go to the ICC World Test Championship final by defeating Australia in the fourth test.
