In the first hour of play in the Ranchi Test against England, Akash Deep did superbly to fill the shoes of Jasprit Bumrah, who was rested from this game.

Although it was only his debut Test match, there had been eyes on Akash Deep because he was taking the place of Bumrah in the XI and was given the nod over Mukesh Kumar, who has played 3 Test matches but had a bad outing in Vizag.

Akash Deep seemed to have got his maiden Test wicket in style when he rattled Zak Crawley’s off-stump, sending it for a cartwheel, in only his second over, but he was denied because it was no-ball as he had overstepped.

That didn’t deter the Bengal pacer as he continued bowling on the perfect length while moving his line a little here and there to test the batters. His first wicket came in the form of Ben Duckett, edging to the wicket-keeper, before he had Ollie Pope lbw, India needing the help of DRS to overturn the on-field call of not out.

Akash Deep had his another big moment soon as once again he bowled Zak Crawley, the ball fizzing through the opener’s defenses and once again hitting the top of the off-stump.

Akash let out a huge roar before turning back quickly to the umpire to confirm it was not a no-ball, which it wasn’t as the umpire signaled Crawley to keep walking. His first spell on debut read 7-0-24-3.
