A tweet from veteran commentator Harsha Bhogle on Rachin Ravindra has – whether intentionally or unintentionally – triggered the fans of Virat Kohli as it included the famous “landmark” and “modern T20 cricket” words that are often attached to Kohli when fans and experts criticise the RCB star.
On Tuesday night in Chennai, Rachin Ravindra played a sizzling knock – twice in two innings – against Gujarat Titans. The young left-handed Kiwi smashed 46 runs in 20 balls, garnering a strike rate of 230. He, however, couldn’t get to his maiden IPL fifty and got stumped off Rashid Khan’s bowling.
Everyone has been impressed with Rachin’s ultra-aggressive intent in his two IPL innings.
Commentator Harsha Bhogle praised Rachin’s selflessness and not having any obsession with the landmark of a half-century.
Bhogle tweeted: “Rachin Ravindra’s innings is an illustration of modern T20 cricket. He is 46(19) and the old way would have been to play for a 50. But in T20 cricket, 50 isn’t a landmark, it isn’t something that should hold you up. So he goes for the big shot, gets stumped, but he’s played his part. Selfless. Fearless.”
Fans on Twitter took this tweet as an indirect dig from Bhogle against Virat Kohli, who has been criticised of “playing for milestones” at times and “looking to boost average.”
Here are some reactions of Virat Kohli fans to Harsha Bhogle’s tweet on Rachin Ravindra:
A day before Rachin’s knock, Kohli blasted 77 (49) against Punjab in RCB’s 4-wicket win at the Chinnaswamy stadium.
In his post-match interview, interestingly to Harsha Bhogle, Kohli said he doesn’t care about the stats.
“It’s been going on for years and you know, people talk about a lot of other things when you play sport. The achievements, the stats, the numbers. Look at the end of the day when you look back you’re not going to think of the numbers and the stats. It’s the memories that you create,” Kohli said, before citing Rahul Dravid. “Famously Rahul bhai in the change room nowadays says exactly the same to us.”
