Australia won the game by 5 wickets and finally, after two losses, opened their account in the World Cup 2023.
In the chase of 210 runs, Australia lost David Warner (11 runs) and Steve Smith (0 runs) early. But Mitchell Marsh counter-attacked with his trademark aggression and slammed 9 fours to put the pressure back on Sri Lanka, scoring 52 runs in 51 balls. However, he got run out.
After Mitchell Marsh’s dismissal, Josh Inglish scored 58 runs, Marnus Labuschagne scored 40 runs and Glenn Maxwell whacked 31 runs in 21 balls sealing the win for Australia.
Earlier, Adam Zampa took a four-wicket haul, while Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc took two wickets each.
Cummins hailed the spirit of his side to come back from two defeats and also to force a collapse of Sri Lanka from 125/0 to 209 all out.
Cummins said: “Nothing said much on the back of two losses. The energy on the field was great. They started very well. We bowled decently. We stayed at it. The bowlers hit the deck hard. I think high 300 was par on that. There is a lot of people watching this. Outside noise doesn’t bother us a lot. All parts of the game came together today. We would want to keep it up.”
