Former India batsman Gautam Gambhir believes that poor fielding efforts have held back the Pakistan team in ICC events in recent years.
Gautam Gambhir appeared on a chat show with Yuvraj Singh for brand endorsement purposes for Thums Up. The duo talked about the T20 World Cup 2024, set to be played in June in the West Indies and USA.
While chatting about the teams they feel would be in contention to win the T20 World Cup next year, Gambhir touched upon Pakistan’s perennial fielding woes.
Gambhir even labeled the Pakistan team as the “worst in international cricket” when it came to fielding during the World Cup 2023, where Pakistan failed to reach the semis. The dropped catches and misfields in important matches against Australia and Afghanistan potentially cost them a semi-final spot.
“See Pakistan, their fielding is, I saw in the 50-over World Cup, probably the worst in international cricket. They will have to literally pull their socks up if they really want to compete in the T20 format,” Gautam Gambhir said in a video uploaded by Thums Up on Instagram.

With the tournament to be played in the West Indies, where pitches have tended to favor spinners and variation-laden pacers, Gambhir reckons Afghanistan is one side that can be “very very dangerous” for India. Apart from Australia, Gambhir applauded the style and batting approach of Jos Buttler’s England team, with which they won the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia.
“Afghanistan, in those conditions can be very very dangerous. Australia, because they have got impact players, and England because they play T20 cricket the way it should be played,” Gambhir added.

England have made a big call in their coaching staff for the T20 World Cup by roping in West Indies legend and T20 superstar Kieron Pollard as their assistant coach for the tournament. India, on the other hand, are not even sure who their captain will be in the T20 WC.
