It is heartwarming to see a senior player, Rohit Sharma, and a junior player, Shubman Gill, share great partnerships and moments in international cricket. After the pair had a bumper year in 2023 as an opening pair in ODI cricket, Rohit and Gill have started Test cricket on a sound note in 2024, with the youngster securing his place at number 3.
The duo has gone under the radar a bit in the IND vs ENG Test series, overshadowed by the excellent and domination of opener Yasashvi Jaiswal.
But they stole the limelight back on day 2 of the Dharamsala Test with their mammoth partnership and notching up their respective century. Both Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill raised their second century of the series during their huge partnership of 171 (244) for the second wicket in Dharamsala.
Rohit Sharma scored 103 runs with the help of 13 fours and 3 sixes before being bowled by Ben Stokes; Shubman Gill scored 110 runs in 150 balls, cracking 12 fours and 5 sixes but his innings was ended by James Anderson.
Nonetheless, the pair put India into the lead, after England’s total of 218, and after their dismissals, youngsters Sarfaraz Khan and Devdutt Padikkal, who is on debut, solidified India’s position with their stand that is nearing 100 runs.
Gill brought up his century in the 59th over of India’s innings, off the bowling of off-spinner Shoaib Bashir. Gill played a brilliant slog-sweep shot that earned him four runs and took him to the three-figure landmark.
He did his trademark bow-down celebration before Rohit Sharma gave him a hug and the Indian skipper’s huge smile told his happiness at the youngster’s success.
