Despite not being an athletic fielder, Sarfaraz Khan has pulled off a couple of very good catches in his 2-Test career so far, one of them being of Ben Duckett in England’s second innings in the Ranchi Test.
While he may not be the fittest of the Indian players, Sarfaraz Khan has shown some agility in his movement while fielding in catching positions near the bat. He plucked a brilliant catch of Duckett on day 3 in Ranchi as R Ashwin picked the first wicket in England’s second innings.
England had taken a lead of 46 runs, and India needed early breakthroughs to now allow the visitors to run away with the game. Rohit Sharma started off with two spinners, Ashwin and Jadeja. The senior off-spinner, who reached 500 Test wickets in Rajkot, got the first breakthrough in the form of Ben Duckett, and it needed some help from Sarfaraz Khan the fielder.
It was a tossed up ball from Ashwin in line with the stumps, pitching on length and it drew Duckett forward in defence. The ball lobbed on the legside after taking the glove.
Sarfaraz Khan, positioned at forward short leg, was quick to judge the flight of the ball after it had popped up from Duckett’s glove. The fielder moved his hands to his left swiftly and took a spectacular catch. He threw the ball up immediately in celebration and Ashwin, too, jumped in the air to celebrate the first of the three wickets that he took in the second session of the day.

Earlier, it was Dhruv Jurel’s 90-run knock that helped India cross 300. Jurel and Kuldeep forged a superb partnership of 76 (202) taking India from 177/7 to a position where they conceded a deficit of 46 runs.
