RCB women players Ellyse Perry and Smriti Mandhana got emotional following the one-run loss on the last ball to the Delhi Capitals women in match number 17 of the WPL 2024.
While Mandhana seemed to be welling up in tears on the ground following the heartbreaking loss, it feels that Ellyse Perry, a multiple-time World Cup winner with Australia, felt the heart-shattering nature of the defeat more when he returned to the dressing room.
The fact that a league match brought out such kinds of emotions in two senior international players tells you how much they valued the potential win – a win would have kept them in a very good position for a playoff spot. But now, it was the Delhi Capitals who sealed their position in the top three along with Mumbai Indians, leaving RCB to contend with UP Warriorz for the remaining one spot and with one game to go for both teams.
In the chase of 182 runs, Ellyse Perry cracked 49 (32), and Sophie Devine scored 26 (16), but the limelight-stealing knock came from wicket-keeper Richa Ghosh, who blasted 51 (29). However, Ghosh couldn’t take her side over the line on the last ball.
With 2 runs needed on the last delivery, Richa’s shot went straight to Shafali at point who fired the throw at the bowler’s end, and Jonassen caught Richa short by a few inches, winning the game for DC by only one run.

The RCB social media handle posted a video of the dressing room meeting. While the coach spoke, Mandhana looked blank and Ellyse Perry looked emotional, almost close to tearing up.
RCB captioned the post: “Ecstacy one moment, agony the very next! So near yet so far. The girls were heartbroken after coming second by the barest of margins, and coach Luke tried to cheer them up before the all important game against Mumbai! “
