R Ashwin gave a hilarious reply that shut up Michael Vaughan when the former England skipper asked the Indian off-spinner how would young Yashasvi Jaiswal fare in Australia in the Test series later this year.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, aged 22, has had a bumper start to his Test career. In 16 Tests innings in 9 Test matches, the left-hander has amassed 1028 runs at an average of 68.

He’s cracked two double centuries – both recently against England – and a century. Against England, Jaiswal finished with 712 runs – becoming only the second Indian batsman, after Sunil Gavaskar – to rack up over 700 runs in a Test series.

R Ashwin, who claimed his 500th Test wicket and featured in his 100th Test match, appeared on the Club Prairie Fire show with former cricketers Michael Vaughan and Adam Gilchrist.

While Vaughan praised Jaiswal for the extraordinary start to his Test career, the 2005 Ashes-winning captain asked Ashwin, while also expressing a hint of scepticism, how would Jaiswal fare in Australia. India will tour Australia for a 5-Test series this year, from November to January.

R Ashwin had a smirk on his face when he hit back not only at Vaughan but all the experts, in particular in India, who question how will their new players fare overseas. The 37-year-old off-spinner, who himself often gets questioned for a lack of five-for in SENA countries, reckons people ask such questions when they want the player to fail away from home.

Ashwin said, “This is one part of the narrative that I genuinely laugh at. In India especially, you have lots of experts saying about someone who has sort of burst onto the scene. Hey, but hang on, let’s wait and see how he performs in Australia, in South Africa, in England. I find it ridiculously funny, because unless and until you want somebody to fail, you wouldn’t say something like that. You’re looking forward to somebody failing.”

Ashwin heaped praise on Jaiswal’s skill and talent and believes the left-hander has the tools to do well in Australia on his first tour.

“Somebody like Yashasvi is a natural-gifted ball-striker. He is somebody who, whatever he has touched, has turned into gold. But I am sure, down the line, he is going to get the opportunity to fail and also see what it takes to succeed. That’s the wonderful nature of our great game. I think in Australia, or wherever it is, Yashasvi has the tools to be successful,” Ashwin asserted.
