Gujarat Titans had two blockbuster seasons in IPL 2022 and IPL 2023 – they won the IPL in their first-ever tournament and were inches away from winning the second consecutive title as well but Ravindra Jadeja and CSK stole it from the jaws of defeat last year.
But for the IPL 2024 season, they have been left amid insecurities and selection headaches. Their previous captain, Hardik Pandya, has departed back to the Mumbai Indians, and senior fast bowler Mohammed Shami, last season’s leading wicket-taker, has been ruled out due to injury.
Shubman Gill, aged 24, will lead in the IPL for the first time. He will have the support of international captains Kane Williamson and Rashid Khan, plus veterans like Saha and Miller to rely on for information and assistance.
2 biggest selection headaches for Gujarat Titans for IPL 2024:
Williamson or Sai Sudharsan: Who bats at number 3?
Last season, Williamson got injured in the first match and missed the rest of the season. Sai Sudharsan stepped up in the number 3 role and had a bumper tournament, including a majestic knock in the final. The young Indian left-hander is also in superb domestic form while Williamson, too, has been racking up runs in international cricket, across formats.
Both are specialists at number 3, but one of them will have to adjust to the new role at number 4, vacated by Hardik Pandya’s departure.
How will Gujarat Titans fit in Noor Ahmad?
Afghanistan chinaman bowler Nooe Ahmed was outstanding in his debut IPL season last year, picking 16 wickets. But now with Williamson fit, how will Gujarat Titans play Noor, who has been in impressive T20 form in the past 12 months?
Rashid Khan, Kane Williamson, and David Miller are three first-choice overseas players for GT, leaving one spot for competition between Noor, Matthew Wade, Joshua Little, Azmatullah Omarzai and Spencer Johnson.
