[Watch] Rohit Sharma Gives A Standing Ovation To Dhruv Jurel In Ranchi Test

Dhruv Jurel recorded the best score by an Indian wicket-keeper in Tests since the absence of Rishabh Pant as the youngster played a valiant knock of 90 runs against England in Ranchi.

After the failures of KS Bharat over the past year, India decided to give Dhruv Jurel a Test debut in Rajkot. He played an impressive innings of 46 runs in Rajkot. And now in Ranchi, on a slightly tougher pitch with low bounce and lack of pace, the 23-year-old showed great application, temperament, and reactiveness to score 90 runs in 149 balls with the help of 6 fours and 4 sixes.

Dhruv Jurel got great support from Kuldeep Yadav, the left-hander batting for 131 balls for 28 runs. This allowed India to slowly crawl back into the game after being 177/7 in reply to England’s 353.

On Day 2 evening, Jurel and Kuldeep defended well and rotated the strike, taking India to stumps without losing the 8th wicket. On the morning of Day 3, while Kuldeep continued his resilience, Dhruv Jurel played audacious shots to cut down the difference between India and England’s totals.

The right-hander unleashed his range of strokes, seen often in T20 cricket. As he reached his half-century, by tapping a delivery from Hartley to long-on, he got a standing ovation from everyone in the stadium, including captain Rohit Sharma. Rohit was up on his feet, applauding Jurel’s valiant effort.

Jurel unfortunately fell 10 runs short of what would have been his maiden Test century in only his second Test match. He got a superb delivery from Tom Hartley that pitched on middle and turned considerably to beat Jurel’s defence and hit the off-stump.

India got bowled out for 307, conceding a first-innings deficit of 46 runs.
