The BCCI and Indian Premier League are all set to take a major step towards globalizing their brand with the auction for the 2023 season to be hosted in Istanbul. Yes, the Turkish city has emerged as a strong contender to host the bidding wars for the big event which is expected to take place on December 16.
The IPL 2023 auction may be the first time in the history of the Indian Premier League that will take place outside India. As per a report by Cricbuzz, the BCCI has shortlisted Turkey’s biggest city Istanbul as one of the probable venues for the auction.
Cricbuzz reported that Istanbul and Bengaluru have been shortlisted as the host cities for the next IPL Auction. So far, all the IPL auctions have taken place in India only because many franchises felt that hosting the event overseas would be expensive. However, now with the recent increase in teams’ revenue and the sales of media rights at an astronomical amount, has prompted the BCCI and the teams to consider conducting the event abroad.
The administrations of the BCCI have been in discussion with the 10 IPL franchises over the same. A final decision on the matter is expected to be out in the first week of November. Notably, Bengaluru is still an option to host the event depending on how the discussions on hosting the event in Turkey go ahead. The IPL 2022 mega-auctions were also hosted in BCCI earlier this year in February.
Meanwhile, all the franchises have been asked to announce the list of released players by 15th November. The players who are not retained by their respective franchises have full rights to put their names in the hat for the 2023 mini-auction.
