All One Day International matches are key from hereon to finalize the eventual squad for the mega-tournament in October-November. There were a few surprise, big-name exclusions from the One Day International squad for West Indies.
Here are three big Indian players who are not selected in ODI squad vs West Indies:
Mohammed Shami
Mohammed Shami is a key player for India in One Day and Test formats. However, Shami has surprisingly not been named in both squads. Shami was part of India’s last One Day series, at home vs Australia, and did well.
It is believed that this exclusion from the West Indies tour is because Shami is rested. With no explanation or press conference from the BCCI, it is only the acceptable reason for Shami’s exclusion, although he’s currently getting a full one-month break after WTC Final.
Nonetheless, Shami is expected to return in the One Day International matches after this West Indies tour, leading up to the Asia Cup and World Cup.
Washington Sundar
The way Sundar’s India career has panned out in the last couple of years has been really disappointing for the fans and must have been frustrating for Sundar himself who has had to deal with multiple injuries in this period. By mid-2021, Sundar was seen as a potential future star and was expected to become a regular player for India, however, injuries have marred his career in the past two years.
He has missed a lot of cricket in recent times and hasn’t really performed well, thus, perhaps he has lost the faith of the selectors while Axar Patel has risen in stature. Sundar has 16 wickets in 16 One Day’s, and he may not be part of the One Day setup currently, but the 23-year-old has time and talent to catch up with his India career in the coming years.
Arshdeep Singh
Arshdeep Singh hasn’t got opportunities in ODIs so far to show his mettle in the 50-over format. He’s bowled in only 2 ODI innings – both in good batting conditions in New Zealand last year – and went wicketless.
He has shown in T20I cricket that he’s cut out for international level – 41 wickets in 26 T20Is – but in spite of that, the selectors and management have overlooked him in ODIs, even as India have struggled for a left-arm seamer. And no left-arm seamer in the country currently has the multi-phase skillset and temperament that Arshdeep has. As the World Cup 2023 approaches, India must find a way to get him in the side and give him a decent run in the ODI team.
