In one of the most unexpected and unusual statements, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has made a release asking the fans to support captain Babar Azam and the Pakistan team as they struggle in the World Cup 2023 in India.
Fans were left stunned and surprised at the PCB “urges cricket fraternity to support Pakistan Team” when the side is still competing in the tournament in India.
Captain Babar Azam and the Pakistani players have come under huge scrutiny and heavy criticism for their poor show in their last three games in the World Cup. After winning their first two matches against Netherlands and Sri Lanka, Pakistan went down to India, Australia, and Afghanistan. Their latest defeat to Afghanistan – where their bowlers failed to defend a total of 282 runs against Afghanistan in Chennai – seems to have hurt the Pakistan fans the most.
With 3 losses in 5 games, Pakistan are now standing on the verge of a group-stage exit. They have not reached the semi-finals of the ODI World Cup in the last two editions.
The PCB on Thursday produced a statement asking fans to show support to Babar Azam and the team.
“The PCB acknowledges the emotions and sentiments of cricket fans following the three consecutive defeats faced by the national team in the ICC World Cup 2023,” the PCB said in a statement. “In this challenging environment, the board administration hopes that the cricketing fraternity and fans will continue to support captain Babar Azam and the entire Pakistan cricket team.”
“Addressing the media scrutiny directed at captain Babar Azam and the team management, the board’s stance, echoing that of former cricketers, is that successes and defeats are part of the game.”
Pakistan are not out of the semi-final race yet. So this kind of statement expectedly attracted plenty of trolling and criticism of the PCB.
Fans came up with hilarious tweets and memes to troll PCB for asking for support for Babar Azam:
