While fielding on the deep square leg boundary in Gujarat Titans‘ season opener against Chennai Super Kings on March 31, Kane Williamson severely injured his right knee. The Kiwi batsman, playing his first game for the Titans, appeared to be in severe pain as he was taken off the pitch after 13 overs.

He hurt his knee landing from the jump after preventing the ball from going over the ropes, but it eventually bounced back and touched the boundary line. Williamson was attended to by trainers from both teams on the sidelines before being escorted back to the locker room. For the second innings, Titans turned to Sai Sudharshan as their impact player.

To recap, the Gujarat Titans won the toss and decided to chase the ball. The early loss of Devon Conway hurt Chennai Super Kings, but Ruturaj Gaikwad kept the scoreboard moving. The kid really excelled and maximised his playing time. His 50-ball knock included nine huge sixes and four fours on the way to 92 runs.

However, the rest of CSK’s batting lineup did not back him up, and the team stalled out early. CSK’s final score of 178/7 was largely due to MS Dhoni’s four and six in the final stages of their innings.

The in-form opener for the Gujarat Titans, Shubman Gill, came out swinging and scored 63 runs off of 36 balls. The rest of the batting order chipped in, and the finishing skills of Rahul Tewatia and Rashid Khan allowed the Titans to reach their target with four balls to spare.
