India won their 8th Asia Cup title by defeating Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup 2023 final on Sunday in Colombo by 10 wickets.
Riding on Mohammed Siraj‘s 6-wicket haul, along with one wicket for Jasprit Bumrah and three for Hardik Pandya, India bowled Sri Lanka out for a mere total of 50 runs in 15.2 overs. With such a small target to chase, captain Rohit Sharma sent Ishan Kishan to open alongside Shubman Gill and the young duo chased the 51-run target down in only 6.1 overs.
While bowling Sri Lanka out for 50 runs signaled Indian bowling dominance and strength, it also gave relief to the Indian fans and Indian cricketers who endured India’s shameful loss to Sri Lanka in the 2000 Coca-Cola Champions Trophy in Sharjah.
In that match, chasing 300 runs, India were bowled out for only 54 runs with Chaminda Vaas taking a 5-wicket haul. Yuvraj Singh was part of that playing XI that was bowled out for 54 runs and India lost by a massive margin of 245 runs.
Some of the pain of that loss was allayed today with India’s bumper win in the match that was concluded in only 21.3 overs.
Yuvraj Singh’s emotional tweet for revenge after 23 years over Sri Lanka
Yuvraj Singh took to Twitter to express his emotions about this win by Rohit Sharma’s team.
Yuvraj Singh tweeted: “The monkey is finally off our back!
23 years ago team India 🇮🇳 was all out for only 54 against #SriLanka in Sharjah.
Congratulations boys on a dominating performance in the #AsiaCup!
Looking forward to this form being carried thru to the #WorldCup”
Mohammed Siraj recorded the 4th best bowling figures by an Indian in ODIs of 6/21.
After winning the Player of the Match award, Siraj said: “Have been bowling well since a long time. Was missing the edges earlier. But found them today. The wicket was seaming earlier, but there was swing today. Thought that I will bowl fuller because of the swing. When there’s good bonding between fast bowlers, it’s helpful for the team. I was thinking it would be great if I could stop the boundary. My best spell. This cash prize goes to the groundsmen. This tournament wouldn’t have been possible without them.”
