Australia captain Pat Cummins is excited to step foot at the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad and is excited at the prospect of possibly beating India, in front of their home fans, a whopping 130,000 of them, on Sunday.
Australia will play their 8th ODI World Cup final – they have won 5 of their 7 ODI World Cup finals – on Sunday in Ahmedabad against the hitherto undefeated team captained by Rohit Sharma.
This will also be the first time in the 13 editions of the ODI World Cup that two teams who have previously faced off in an ODI World Cup final will do again: Australia and India met in the 2003 World Cup final in Johannesburg, which Ricky Ponting’s side won comfortably.
After India defeated New Zealand in the first semi-final on Wednesday in Mumbai, Pat Cummins and his side defeated South Africa in an exciting, low-scoring, thrilling semi-final in Kolkata on Thursday.
Good thing is a few of us have been there for finals before: Pat Cummins
Cummins himself remained at the end to add the finishing touches to Australia’s chase of the target of 213 runs scoring 14* crucial runs at the end, along with Mitchell Starc who scored 16*.
In the post-match presentation, Pat Cummins was asked about the upcoming final against India. The Aussie captain said that he “can’t wait” to face India in Ahmedabad, which, he is certain of, will be filled with the blues.
Pat Cummins also pointed out that a number of members of his team have previously played in a World Cup final, either in the 2015 World Cup final or the 2021 T20 World Cup final, so that experience helps.
“The good thing is a few of us have been there for finals before,” Cummins said. “Got to embrace it, the stadium is going to be packed, pretty one-sided but got to embrace it. The 2015 World Cup was a career highlight, so to be out there in a final in India, can’t wait.”
