Rishabh Pant banished the doubts over his place in India’s limited-overs side with a spectacular maiden ODI century, in the third ODI against England in Manchester, helping India win the series by pulling off a terrific chase after the team was in trouble early on.

Rishabh Pant’s first ODI century, brought up in his 24th ODI innings and after 5 fifties and after a highly-backed promotion to number 4 from the Dravid–Sharma management, helped India claim the ODI series 2-1.

In the chase of 260, India had slipped to 38/3 and then 72/4 before a stunning, counter-attacking partnership of 133 runs from 115 balls. After Pandya’s dismissal, Pant reined into the England bowling, smashing 48 runs off 25 balls in a 56* runs stand with Ravindra Jadeja, and killed off the game soon, walloping 6 boundaries in the last 7 balls he faced.

Meanwhile, Indian captain Rohit Sharma was effusive in praise of Pant and Pandya for the way they stitched a memorable match-winning stand after losing the top-order cheaply.

“[We were] quite pleased chasing 260 – it was a good pitch, but we knew it won’t be easy if we lost wickets early. We didn’t want it to happen, but if you look at the positive side, a lot of these guys haven’t batted a long period in the middle overs, and we got to see that from Rishabh and Hardik. Both of them were clinical with the bat – at no point did we feel they were panicking. They backed themselves, played great cricketing shots, which was good to see,” Rohit Sharma said of the duo.
