Rarely in international cricket history has a batsman been in the position of Suryakumar Yadav that the number 1 T20I batter in the world got in after bagging his 3rd consecutive golden duck in ODIs when Ashton Agar bowled him on the first ball he faced in the Chennai ODI.
In the first two ODIs, in Mumbai and Vizag, Suryakumar Yadav was at the receiving end of a sensational new-ball spell from Mitchell Starc where he was sent in at number 4 to deal with one of the deadliest fast bowlers in the world when conditions are assisting pacers. Yadav got two corkers from Starc and was dismissed lbw for first-ball ducks.
Coming into the Chennai ODI, the 3rd and series-deciding game, both India captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid showed their support to Suryakumar Yadav, pointing out at the upside of his potential success in ODIs in the absence of Shreyas Iyer.
In Chennai, the management pushed Suryakumar Yadav down the order from number 4 to number 7. In the chase of 270, KL Rahul was sent at number 4, followed by Axar Patel at number 5 – possibly to pair the right-hander Virat Kohli with a left-hander – followed by Hardik Pandya at number 6.
After Kohli’s dismissal to Ashton Agar in the 36th over, Suryakumar Yadav got in at number 7. The 32-year-old can consider himself a bit unlucky this time as well – the ball on length from Agar skid off the surface and shooted low; SKY would also have himself to blame for going back on a delivery he’d later feel he should have come forward to.
The ball remained low as Suryakumar missed his shot on the off-side – there was, in fact, little chance of him being able to play that ball once he’d gone on the back foot – and clattered into the off-stump. Suryakumar Yadav couldn’t believe it.
The fans couldn’t believe it. After all, this is the best T20 batsman in the world, who’d made a mockery of some of the best in the world over the past two years in the shortest format – but is now unable to put the bat on ball in this ODI series.
3 golden ducks in a row for Suryakumar Yadav. And you’d imagine social media was flooded with some memes and tweets trolling Suryakumar Yadav.
