One of the most popular and vocal players to have represented India was Virender Sehwag. The former Indian batsman has been pretty active on social media as well as commentary and is always speaking his mind on these platforms.
India won the series 4-1 and were far better than the Aussies in the 5 match series.
During a recent interview, Sehwag was asked about the Australians’ lack of sledging in the recently concluded ODI series, and he replied in his trademark style. Viru said that Australian players are scared because of the next year’s mega IPL auction. He also said that Australians are mindful of the fact that if they sledge Indian cricketers, some of the players who captain their franchise might think before bidding for the Australian players.
“They (Australian players) are scared because of the next year’s mega IPL auctions. If they had sledged the Indian players in the ODI series, then the Indian franchise owners might think before bidding high for the Australian players. This can also be a reason for them not to get involved in sledging with their Indian counterparts,” Virender Sehwag told India TV.
Viru also said that the Australian team were too dependent on captain Smith and opener Warner as well as Aaron Finch right up the order. He said that put extra pressure on them which led to poor performances apart from the odd shine.
“I think the Australian team was playing under pressure because they don’t have all the great players now. Their team was dependent on two or three players – David Warner, Steve Smith and Aaron Finch,” Virender Sehwag said in an interview to India TV.
OUR VIEW: Virender Sehwag is known for his humorous style of tweeting and commentating. Although, we don’t know whether he said it seriously or jokingly, we don’t think this can be a reason. Australian players didn’t sledge because they were outplayed in 4 of the 5 matches, in all three departments of the game. It was a very one-sided series.
