Commentator Adam Gilchrist had a savage moment during Pakistan’s second innings in the Boxing Day Test when he accurately predicted the dismissal of Pakistan opener Abdullah Shafique.
Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq opened for Pakistan in their pursuit of huge target of 317 runs, aiming for a historic first Test match win on Australian soil in the 21st century.
However, Shafique was the first wicket to fall in the 5th over of Pakistan’s innings, caught in the slip by Usman Khawaja off a wide outside off-stump delivery from Mitchell Starc.
Sitting in the commentary box were Adam Gilchrist, Isa Guha, and Kerry O’Keeffe. Just before Starc ran in to bowl the first ball of the 5th over, Gilchrist pointed out that the last three overs have been maidens – two by Josh Hazlewood and one by Mitchell Starc.
Gilchrist recalled a theory in Test cricket during his time that when such pressure is built over the batting team with multiple maiden overs, there is a chance for a wicket as the batsman would go after looking for runs to release some pressure.
This turned out to be exactly as Gilchrist thought of, as Shafique went chasing a boundary, looking to drive a ball far away from his body outside the off-stump and edged it to Khawaja.
It was a savage moment for Gilchrist – similar to what Ricky Ponting has had during his commentary stints. Impressed with Gilchrist’s prediction, Kerry O’Keeffe gave him a fist-bump, while Isa Guha, calling the action, couldn’t stop smiling, admitting Gilchrist’s astuteness.
