20-year-old Sameer Rizvi from Uttar Pradesh had a dream start to his IPL as he pumped T20 spin maestro Rashid Khan for a six on the first ball that he played in the IPL 2024.
CSK and Gujarat Titans met at the Chepauk on Tuesday evening for a high-scoring encounter. A number of CSK batters got going and the hosts piled up 206. The finishing touch was provided by..umm..not MS Dhoni..but the 20-year-old Sameer Rizvi, who CSK had bought for a huge price of INR 8.4 crore in the auction.
Rizvi clobbered two sixes in his short six-ball stay in which he scored 14 runs, his strike rate being 233, reminding the CSK fans of Dhoni’s heydays.
Rizvi came in to bat ahead of Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja in the 19th over. And on the first ball that he played in his IPL career, the right-hander smoked Rashid Khan for a six on the leg-side. It was a full delivery on the leg-stump. Rizvi bent low and slog-swept the ball over deep square for a six, as the Chepauk crowd erupted at the batter who is hailed as right-handed Suresh Raina.
Three balls later, Sameer Rizvi jumped down the pitch and launched Rashid over long-off for another maximum.

Former CSK captain MS Dhoni gave a smile upon seeing the sixes from Rizvi.
CSK scouts were impressed with Sameer Rizvi last year during the UP T20 league, where he was the leading six-hitter for his team Kanpur Superstars. In 12 T20 matches coming into the IPL, Rizvi averaged 49 with two half-centuries and a strike rate of 134. He’s smashed 18 sixes in 9 T20 innings, and once again he bashed a couple of on his IPL debut.
