In what was a largely awaited event of the IPL 2024, the new Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya was received with a chorus of loud boos from the crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
Gujarat Titans, who were led by Hardik Pandya in the last two seasons, hosted Mumbai Indians for both teams’ first match of the season. The 30-year-old all-rounder replaced Rohit Sharma, who led MI to 5 IPL titles, immediately as the MI captain, ending Rohit’s decade-long captaincy stint.
Pandya’s return to MI, where he spent 7 seasons from 2015 to 2021, and his being propelled to the captaincy position of MI has been a major talking point among the fans.
Many had expected the Ahmedabad crowd to boo Hardik Pandya on his return to Narendra Modi Stadium, and that is what happened.
When Ravi Shastri announced Pandya’s name at toss, it was followed by a loud boo from the crowd. It grew further when Pandya won the toss and began to speak.

Pandya said at toss: ‘We are gonna bowl first. Looks like a decent track, might get better if the dew arrives. Feels good to be back.
