From one legendary all-rounder to another: Yuvraj Singh hailed Ben Stokes as a “world-class” cricketer who is an “asset” to any team he turns up for on the latter’s ODI retirement.

On Monday, star England all-rounder Ben Stokes bid adieu to ODI cricket. In an unforeseen and shocking announcement, he confirmed that Tuesday’s first ODI match against South Africa, held at his home ground Chester-le-Street in Durham, will be his last ODI in the England shirt.

Ben Stokes ends with 105 ODI matches

In his statement uploaded on his social media handles, the 31-year-old England Test captain said that playing all three formats was “just unsustainable for me now” amid the hectic schedule of the England cricket team, and that his body couldn’t give 100 percent to the 50-over format. England’s 2019 World Cup Final hero admitted that it was an “incredibly tough decision to make”.

“Three formats are just unsustainable for me now. Not only do I feel that my body is letting me down because of the schedule and what is expected of us, but I also feel that I am taking the place of another player who can give Jos [Buttler, England captain] and the rest of the team their all. It’s time for someone else to progress as a cricketer and make incredible memories like I have over the past 11 years,” Stokes said.

However, former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, who, like Stokes had played a starring role in India’s 2011 World Cup triumph, believes that Stokes retired too soon and could have given more to ODI cricket.

Nonetheless, Yuvraj congratulated Stokes on a glittering ODI career and wished him luck for the other two formats.

“Well done on a fabulous ODI career @benstokes38! A world-class all-rounder who’s an asset for any side. Retired too soon! I feel you had a lot more ODI fuel left in you nonetheless enjoy the rest of your career mate! Good luck and best wishes,” Yuvraj Singh tweeted.
