Former India skipper and now a commentator Sunil Gavaskar was totally displeased, and distracted, by a few fans holding the Indian flag with a company’s name on it at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Sunil Gavaskar slammed the fans who had the Indian tricolor with an advertisement on it at the Eden Gardens after the IND vs SA match was concluded.
India thrashed South Africa by a massive margin of 243 runs in Kolkata to seal their spot at the top of the World Cup 2023 points table. While Virat Kohli, for his 49th ODI century, and Ravindra Jadeja, for his 5-wicket haul, were the two big heroes of the game, Shreyas Iyer played a supporting role with his crucial 77-run knock.
Police should confiscate the flag but also warn those people: Sunil Gavaskar
After the match, broadcaster Star Sports roped in Shreyas Iyer for a brief chat with Ravi Shastri, Sunil Gavaskar, and anchor Mayanti Langer.
While Shastri asked Iyer about the game, Sunil Gavaskar didn’t ask any questions. He later revealed that he got distracted by fans who were holding the India flag with a company’s name on it for advertising. Gavaskar reckoned that if the police see something like this again, they should seize the flag with an advertisement on it and reprimand the fans.
“Yeah, I wanted to ask him something, but I got a bit distracted because there was an Indian flag with a company’s name on it. And you know, that is really not allowed. The India flag cannot be defaced by anything,” Gavaskar said.
“They (the flag-bearers) have gone now. In fact, I believe the police, next time they see something like that, should not only confiscate the flag but also warn those people not to put any advertising or whatever it is, whether a company or their product, on the India flag. That is completely not all. I am sorry, I got a bit distracted. I know Ravi (Shastri) wanted me to ask Shreyas a question, but I was just looking at those guys, and trying to signal them,” the commentator added.
