A brilliant innings of 77 runs in 49 balls from Virat Kohli, and strong finishes from Mahipal Lomror and Dinesh Karthik, helped RCB to their first win of the season in their second game of the IPL 2024 tournament.
Virat Kohli got RCB off to a flier in the first over of the chase by collecting four boundaries off Sam Curran. The first boundary was a lucky break for Kohli as Jonny Bairstow dropped a catch at first slip off Kohli’s outside edge to Curran’s outswinger. Kohli hadn’t even opened his account till then.
But from them, Kohli grew in confidence and timing. He first drove Curran’s outside off-stump ball through covers, then clipped a leg-stump delivery toward fine leg for a boundary.
On the last ball of the over then, Virat Kohli unleashed the cover drive once again; this time, he played an uppish shot and it was in the air, however, it was in the gap between the fielders at cover and mid-off and the ball skipped for the fourth four of the over.

Despite the loss of Faf du Plessis and Cameron Green at the other end, Virat Kohli kept going and ended the powerplay with his score of 35 (21). Kohli was dismissed on 77 (49). At that point, RCB needed 47 runs in the last four overs.
Dinesh Karthik and Mahipal Lomror gave a thumping finish to RCB’s innings with their partnership of 48* (18). Karthik scored 28*(10) and Lomror scored 17*(8).
Punjab Kings captain Shikhar Dhawan said of Kohli’s dropped catch by Bairstow, “Virat scored 70-odd runs and we dropped a catch of the class player, we paid the price. If we had taken that catch …. we lost the momentum and then we paid the price for that.”
