Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Shreyas Iyer defended his team’s aggressive and fearless style of play following their loss – their fifth consecutive loss this season – to the Delhi Capitals on Thursday at the Wankhede. However, it was the Capitals’ bowlers who didn’t allow the KKR batters to show aggression for long.
Starting with Chetan Sakariya who rattled Aaron Finch‘s stumps with his inswing, KKR barely got going in their innings. Their former player Kuldeep Yadav, who had bamboozled them with a four-wicket haul in their previous meeting, once again ran through their middle-order with another four-fer in a three-over spell, including the wickets of Shreyas Iyer and Andre Russell.
KKR skipper Shreyas scored 42 runs in 37 balls and Nitish Rana provided the late impetus with 57 runs from 34 balls, supported by Rinku Singh’s 16-ball 23.
The target of 147 wasn’t a daunting one for Delhi Capitals, but was made difficult with a first-ball duck for Prithvi Shaw off Umesh Yadav, who then later returned to pick the wickets of David Warner (42 off 26) and Rishabh Pant.
However, Umesh was the lone warrior among the KKR bowlers as Lalit Yadav (22 off 29) and Warner controlled the run rate in the middle overs before Rovman Powell smashed 33 runs from 16 balls and Axar Patel scored 24 in 17 balls to finish off the run-chase.
KKR, now have just 6 points in 9 matches; they had started the tournament on a positive note with 3 wins in first four matches before their campaign took a downward spiral with five straight losses and now sit just above CSK and MI.
Delhi have 4 wins and 4 losses and will take plenty of confidence from this victory. But, they too have holes to plug; DC will become stronger when say both Khaleel Ahmed and Anrich Nortje are fit.
Meanwhile, the Knight Riders were trolled mercilessly on Twitter following their sixth loss in 9 matches. Fans obliterated KKR’s plans at the auction and in the tournament courtesy of which the side is suffering at the bottom pile of the points table.
