IPL 2023 is just around the corner and the excitement regarding the same has been increasing with every passing day. Every year the bowlers try and outperform each other to win the ‘Purple Cap’, which is to recognize their efforts during the course of the tournament.
With the tournament just a few days away, we bring you a complete list of IPL Purple Cap winners over the years.

2008 – Sohail Tanvir (Rajasthan Royals)
Pakistanis players were a part of the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League and Sohail Tanvir made a lasting impression by helping Rajasthan Royals win the inaugural edition. Sohail picked 22 wickets at an economy of 6.46. During that season, Tanvir also picked up one 4-wicket haul and one 5-wicket haul.
2009- RP Singh (Deccan Chargers)
RP Singh played an instrumental role in Deccan Chargers winning the title of IPL in 2009. He picked up 23 wickets off 16 matches at an economy of 6.98.
2010 –Pragyan Ojha (Deccan Chargers)
While in IPL 2010 Deccan Chargers, which is now defunct, failed to defend the title but Pragyan Ojha put up a stellar show during the tournament. He picked up 23 wickets from 16 matches at an economy of 6.98.
2011- Lasith Malinga (Mumbai Indians)
Legendary bowler Lasith Malinga was the backbone of the Mumbai Indians’ bowling lineup for several years. He picked up 28 wickets at an economy of 5.95 in the 2011 season to win the purple cap. Despite such an amazing performance by Malinga, MI couldn’t reach the final round.
2012-Morne Morkel (Delhi Daredevils)
Morne Morkel played a crucial role in Delhi Daredevils’ success in the 2012 season as they topped the points table during the league stage. He picked up 25 wickets in IPL 2012 to win the purple cap but the side couldn’t reach the final round.
2013-Dwayne Bravo (Chennai Super Kings)
Dwayne Bravo, who has been the bowling mainstay for CSK for many years, created history in 2013 when he became the first bowler in the IPL to pick more than 30 wickets. He picked up wickets at an economy of 7.95 which also earned him the purple cap.
2014-Mohit Sharma (Chennai Super Kings):
In 2014 Mohit Sharma earned the purple cap for his outstanding performance with the ball. He picked 24 wickets off 16 games at an economy of 8.39 in the 2014 season.
2015 – Dwayne Bravo (Chennai Super Kings):
Dwayne Bravo won the purple cap for the second time in the 2015 season. He finished the season with 26 wickets from 17 matches at an economy of 8.14.
2016 – Bhuvneshwar Kumar (Sunrisers Hyderabad)
Senior Indian bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar played an instrumental role in Sunrisers Hyderabad’s maiden title win in 2016. He picked 23 wickets off 17 games at an economy of 7.42.
2017 – Bhuvneshwar Kumar (Sunrisers Hyderabad)
Bhuvi carried his sensational form in the next season as well. He became the first bowler in IPL history to retain the Purple Cap by picking 26 wickets off 14 games at an economy of 7.05.
2018 — Andrew Tye (Kings XI Punjab):
Punjab Kings had a disappointing season in 2018 as they finished 7th in the points table. However, Andrew Tye had an amazing season with the ball. He was rewarded with the Purple Cap as he picked 24 wickets including 3 four-wicket hauls.
2019 — Imran Tahir (Chennai Super Kings)
The veteran bowler, Imran Tahir gave an outstanding performance with the ball in the 2019 season as he picked up 26 wickets from 17 matches. But his efforts weren’t enough to help CSK retain their 2018 trophy.
2020 – Kagiso Rabada (Delhi Capitals)
Kagiso Rabada got his hands on the Purple Cap in the 2020 season, where he gave a sensational performance with the ball. He picked up 30 wickets from 17 matches but all his efforts went in vain as Delhi Capitals lost the final to Mumbai Indians.
2021 – Harshal Patel (Royal Challengers Bangalore)
RCB made it to the playoffs largely all thanks to a fine bowling effort from Harshal Patel. He had an amazing season with the ball as he picked up 2 wickets equaling Dwayne Bravo’s record in 2013. Patel also recorded a hattrick against Mumbai Indians during the league stage encounter.
2022- Yuzvendra Chahal (Rajasthan Royals)
Rajasthan Royals made it to the final for the first time since their win in 2018 all thanks to the sensational bowling performance of Yuzvendra Chahal. Chahal picked up 27 wickets from 17 matches and earned the maiden Purple cap of his IPL career.
