Chennai Super Kings skipper and icon MS Dhoni is perhaps the most decorated player in the history of the IPL. The buzz and excitement of seeing MS Dhoni back in action, in IPL 2023, is at growing constantly among the fans as the 16th edition of the tournament approaches near.
The IPL 2023 is likely to be the last season of MS Dhoni as a player.
MS Dhoni is one of the few players to have played in all the 15 seasons of the IPL. Being CSK’s captain and arguably the best IPL captain ever, Mahendra Singh has also made a fortune from IPL salaries.
Overall, MS Dhoni has earned INR 176.8 crore in salaries in the IPL
Thalla is second in terms of earning from IPL salaries, only behind Rohit Sharma, who has earned INR 178.6 crore from salaries in his IPL career.
MS Dhoni’s salary for IPL 2023 is INR 12 crore
Ahead of the IPL 2022 mega-auction, CSK retained Ravindra Jadeja in the highest bracket of INR 16 crore followed by MS Dhoni in the second-highest bracket of INR 12 crore. It is learned that it was Dhoni who told CSK to put Jadeja in the top category as Jadeja was later named their captain, but the all-rounder gave up the duties mid-season in 2022.
The IPL auction dynamics have been such that even better, more experienced players sometimes get lesser salary than the younger or inexperienced ones because of multiple franchises chasing that player.
And that is the case we will see in this article where we pick 5 of the many players who will be making more money through salary in the IPL 2023 than MS Dhoni, who will earn INR 12 crore this season.
Here are 5 younger players who will be making more money than MS Dhoni in IPL 2023:
Ishan Kishan – INR 15.25 crore
As discussed when multiple franchises go after one player in the auction, the salary of that player shoots up significantly. That was the case when Mumbai Indians were adamant o rebuying Wicket Keeper Batsmen in the IPL 2022 auction.
24-year-old Kishan being a young Indian wicket-keeper batsman who has proven himself in the IPL and at the international level attracted bids from four different franchises in the IPL 2022 mega-auction. But Mumbai Indians, who started the bidding, didn’t relent and acquired Wicket Keeper Batsmen for INR 15.25 crore. He has been retained for the same salary for IPL 2023.
Deepak Chahar – INR 14 crore
Deepak was one of the most successful, highly skilled new ball bowler from IPL 2018 to 2021. Even though CSK had to release him – they retained Jadeja, Dhoni, Moeen and Gaikwad -CSK were adamant about getting Chahar back in the IPL 2022 mega-auction, like MI were with Kishan.
DC, SRH, and RR were other teams who made bids for 29-year-old CSK Pacer, but CSK were unshakable and got Speedster back for INR 14 crore – the most they had ever spent for a single player in the auction until 2023.
He unfortunately missed IPL 2022 due to injury, but was retained for this salary for IPL 2023.
Sam Curran – INR 18.5 crore
24-year-old English Pacer became the most expensive player ever in the IPL – in auction or retained – when Punjab Kings shelled out INR 18.5 crore on the England all-rounder in the IPL 2023 auction.
Being a pace-bowling all-rounder with age on his side and a recent experience of winning the T20 World Cup in Australia, where he was the Player of the Tournament and the Player of the Final, Pacer was set to have a massive payday. But even this amount went over his imagination as MI, RCB, CSK, RR, LSG, and PBKS all set out with their bids, and eventually, Punjab, for whom Curran played his maiden IPL in 2019, got him for a bumper amount.
Cameron Green – INR 17.5 crore
Soon after Sam Curran became the most expensive player in the IPL, Australia all-rounder, Cameron Green, all of age 23, became the second-most expensive player: after failing to grab Curran, Mumbai Indians remained determined to get Green and splurged INR 17.5 crore on the young Aussie who was yet to step a foot in the Indian Premier League and had played a handful of T20Is.
Sanju Samson – INR 14 crore
